You open a new tab dozens of times a day and look at the same grid of shortcuts. This puts a sword upgrade game there instead: spend gold, roll for the next level, and decide how far to push before a failure destroys the blade.
Sword Growth replaces your new tab page with an addictive sword enhancement game.
Every new tab is a chance to level up your sword. Mine gold, enhance your weapon, and push your luck — but beware, your sword can shatter!
How to play:
5 visual sword tiers that evolve as you level up:
The catch: higher levels mean lower success rates and higher destruction chances. One bad roll and your sword shatters back to Level 1. How far can you push it?

When you'd reach for it
One roll per tab, then back to work
The game lives on the new tab page, so a run is a single click between whatever you were doing. Enhance costs 100 gold at level 1 and multiplies by 1.5 each level, so early rolls are cheap and level 15 already costs tens of thousands. You start with 10,000 gold in the bank.
Deciding when to cash out
Past level 1 a sell button appears showing the exact price: 120% of everything you spent getting there, plus 500 gold per level. Selling resets the blade to level 1 and keeps the gold, which is the usual way to fund the next run. Your success and failure counts carry over, so the win rate in the corner is a lifetime number.
When the gold runs out
A mine button appears only when you are at level 1 and cannot afford the next enhancement. Each mine pays 50 to 200 gold, with a 10% chance of a critical that doubles it. Above level 1 there is no mining — the way out of a dry spell is selling the sword you already have.
Permissions & privacy
Single purpose
Sword Growth replaces the browser's new tab page with a sword enhancement game. Users can mine gold, enhance their sword to increase its level, sell it, and track their enhancement statistics. All game data is stored locally in the browser.
It runs only the code shipped inside the package — no remote code is fetched.
Questions people ask
How do I put a game on my Chrome new tab page?
Install the extension and the new tab page is replaced with the game — there is nothing to configure and no popup to open. Chrome will ask you to confirm the new tab change the first time. Progress loads with the page, so every tab picks up at the level you left off.
What are the enhancement odds at each level?
Level 1 succeeds 50% of the time, and each level after that subtracts one percentage point — 31% at level 20, 11% at level 40, and 1% at level 50. The current success rate is printed under the enhance button, along with the destruction chance when it applies. The cost is deducted whether the roll succeeds or not.
What happens when an enhancement fails?
A failure rolls again against a destruction chance, and only that second roll resets you. Below level 10 it is 10%, then 25% through level 20, 40% through 30, 55% through 40, and 70% above that. A failure that survives the destruction roll leaves the sword at its current level, so most early failures cost only gold.
Does my progress save when I close Chrome?
Yes. Level, gold, total enhancements, and total failures are written to chrome.storage.local after every action, and the new tab page reads them back on load. Because it is local storage, progress belongs to that Chrome profile on that machine rather than following your account to another computer.
What permissions does it ask for?
The manifest declares one permission, storage, and no host permissions at all. That means it has no way to read or change the pages you browse — the only thing it can touch is the new tab page it replaces, which is declared separately as a new tab override. To get the default new tab back, disable or remove it from chrome://extensions.
