You open Reddit to check one thing and surface twenty minutes later at the bottom of the home feed. This hides the feed itself, so the search box and the thread you actually came for are what's left on the page.

You open Reddit to look one thing up and lose twenty minutes to the home feed. Reddit Focus Mode hides that feed so Reddit stays a place you search and read, not scroll.

It's URL-aware. The home, r/popular and r/all feeds get hidden, but individual subreddits, comment threads and search results stay fully usable. Trending carousels and the right sidebar go too. Where the feed used to be, a small card reminds you focus mode is on and gives you a one-click way back.

  • Looking something up without falling in

    Half of Reddit use is arriving from a search result and reading one thread. On reddit.com and the r/popular or r/all lists the post feed is removed and replaced with a small card, so there is nothing to scroll. The subreddit you were headed to opens normally.

  • Staying on task during work hours

    Turn it on in the morning from the toolbar popup and the endless column stays gone across every tab. A floating Focus button sits on the page so you can flip the state without opening the popup, and it stays in sync with the toggle either way.

  • Letting yourself look on purpose

    Blocking Reddit outright tends to end in the block being removed. The card in the feed's place has a button that brings the feed back for that moment, and the floating button turns focus mode off entirely when you decide to browse.

How to use it

How do I hide the Reddit home feed in Chrome?

Install it and the feed is already hidden the next time reddit.com loads, since focus mode starts on. The rule is URL based: the front page and paths under r/popular or r/all lose their post list, everything else keeps it. Click the toolbar icon to switch it off whenever you want the feed back.

Can I still read individual subreddits and comment threads?

Yes. Only home, r/popular and r/all count as feed pages, so r/askhistorians, a comment thread and a search results page all render their posts as usual. The hiding rule skips lookalike names too — r/popularscience and r/allthings are treated as ordinary subreddits, not feeds.

Does the feed flash on screen before it disappears?

The content script runs at document_start and the hiding classes go onto the html element before paint, so the feed is not drawn and then removed. Reddit is a single-page app, so navigation inside it is watched as well and the rule is re-evaluated when the path changes.

What does it hide besides the main feed?

Trending searches, recommended-community carousels and community highlight carousels are hidden on every Reddit page, not only feed pages, along with the right-hand sidebar. Both new Reddit and old.reddit.com layouts are covered, including old.reddit's #siteTable list and its .side sidebar.

What permissions does it use and what gets stored?

The manifest declares one permission, storage, and no host_permissions. Two booleans live in chrome.storage.local — focusEnabled and showToggle — which is what keeps the state after a reload. The content script is matched to https://*.reddit.com/*, and it only toggles CSS classes and one placeholder element on the page.
